How moustache-growing campaign boosted funding opportunities in prostate cancer research

Prostate Cancer UK's ambitions have grown with the success of its principal donor, the Movember Foundation, responsible for an annual moustache-growing campaign that has raised millions for men's health-research charities. PCUK is to establish a £5-million Movember Centre of Excellence and has also just launched its first major fundraising campaign. Adam Smith spoke to PCUK’s director of research, Iain Frame, about the charity's relationship with the Movember Foundation and plans for the centre of excellence.

What will a director of research do that’s different to what your head of research does already?

The head of research will get the internal inquiries—the more operational stuff about the grant-giving rules—whereas the director is effectively a director of the charity, seeing the whole thing in the round. The director of research is the more external-facing role, not only meeting with researchers but also government, the National Institute for Health Research, the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and others.
