Catherine Clarke, a professor in the English department of the University of Southampton, received funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council for a project investigating medieval Swansea. Rebecca Hill spoke to her about how she got her project off the ground.
Where did you start your research career, and how has it changed?
I started working on early medieval literature and culture, having done medieval studies for my MA. In the period during and after my PhD, I was trying to develop a sense of my own discipline and expertise as a cultural historian and textual critic. From quite an early stage I was keen to look at text alongside other forms of culture and material, and I think my work has become more interdisciplinary.
