Stephen Caddick, UCL’s vice-provost for enterprise, led the team that last year won a £4.5-million grant from EPSRC's Impact Acceleration Account scheme. Here, he tells Adam Smith what made their application such a hit.
EPSRC provides funds through the Impact Accleration Account scheme to 31 universities, with the idea that each funded university would then support researchers who apply internally for funds and want to try different ways to make an impact with their work, such as through secondments to companies.
One of the ways that UCL connects research to impact and enterprise is with an Enterprise Steering Committee. This group comprises academics and heads of departments as well as those involved in commercial activities and entrepreneurship at UCL. It oversees a variety of activities, one of which is checking every internal award made from the Impact Acceleration Account; a mechanism very attractive to any research council that is keen to ensure fair and transparent management of funds.
