Opportunity profile: Predicting the future from the North Atlantic

Meric Srokosz, a science coordinator at the Natural Environment Research Council, tells Penny Sarchet about a £2.4-million programme aimed at developing a better understanding of ocean circulation and the climate.

What is the RAPID-AMOC programme?

The programme will fund projects that determine the variability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation using the RAPID 26.5° north array. It builds on the RAPID and RAPID-WATCH programmes, which started running in 2001. These are aimed at trying to understand what’s happening to circulation in the Atlantic, because the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change models suggest that the circulation should slow down under global warming.
