My winning proposal: An urgent study of the ‘go home’ vans

Hannah Jones, a sociologist at the University of Warwick, tells Adam Smith how a Home Office campaign to reduce illegal immigration led to her winning an Urgency Grant from the Economic and Social Research Council.

How did you come to apply for an Urgency Grant?

It was actually a bit serendipitous. In July, I was on Twitter having conversations with different academics and non-governmental organisations about the ‘go home’ vans. On the same day, I got an email about the ESRC’s Urgency Grant scheme. So I thought, would the vans fit with this scheme? What can I do that’s not just complaining on social media or highlighting this issue as a commentator?
