NERC Urgency Grant to study the winter storms

Gerd Masselink, a physical geographer from Plymouth University, tells Catie Lichten how research council feedback shaped his winning proposal to study the impacts of storms on parts of England’s coastline.

What is your Urgency Grant for?

It’s to study the impacts of the winter storms we’ve been having on the coastline in the south-west of England. We are looking at the post-storm coastal morphology, comparing it with what the coast looked like before the winter and then assessing the impacts of the storms, and looking at the rate of recovery. The urgency was there because beaches and dunes recover rapidly.
