The Wellcome Trust Centre for Global Health Research at the University of Sussex was launched at the end of January. Director Melanie Newport tells Catie Lichten how a multidisciplinary approach helped her win funding for a centre that will help Africa’s universities win more grants.
What is your centre going to do?
A main role of the global health research centres is to provide mentorship and support for people to write competitive proposals. Another thing we want to do in our centre is more generic training to strengthen the institutions, not just focus on the high-flying scientists who could be future group leaders and institution leaders. We want to provide training and knowledge for lecturers at universities, for instance, because what often happens in developing countries is that once people get their post they do not get any continuing professional development.
