Geraint Ellis won a £468,570 Healthy Urban Living in Brazil grant despite having little experience in that country. He tells Anna McKie how he built the partnership for the bid at short notice.
The Economic and Social Research Council’s Healthy Urban Living in Brazil call, which was supported by the Newton Fund, ran during summer 2015.
The council’s portfolio manager told Funding Insight at the time that the UK principal investigator’s history of working in Brazil would probably be important when bids were assessed, although he added that he didn’t seek to discourage new entrants. Moreover, although the ESRC would award “no extra points for existing collaborations [with Brazilian researchers], those might come through stronger”.
