Opportunity profile: Tracing the elusive El Niño

NERC and the Department for International Development have launched a fast-response programme to study how changes in the ocean currents off South America’s Pacific coast affect the rest of the world. Ruth Kelman, NERC’s head of freshwater science, told James Field what to expect from the El Niño call.

The joint Natural Environment Research Council and DFID programme Understanding the Impacts of the Current El Niño Event invites research proposals on topics ranging from El Niño’s effects on water quality, to the scale of human displacement and related environmental factors that may influence the transmission of vector-borne diseases.

The two funders aim to support projects with budgets of up to £300,000 for up to 18 months.
