My winning proposal: Fixing a career break

When Lucy Bates put her research career on hold to start a family, open access and impact were little more than buzzwords. She tells Beckie Smith how a Daphne Jackson Fellowship brought her up to speed.

The Daphne Jackson Trust provides fellowships to help researchers move back into academia after a career break of two or more years. Fellowships are typically on a part-time basis for two years and cover a salary and some research expenses, as well as £1,500 a year for training, travel and computer equipment.

Applicants must be UK residents with a good degree in science, engineering, technology or maths, plus at least three years’ experience in research or a PhD.
