Artists in residence at Cern are there less to produce art and more to research and inform their work—so academic artistic practitioners are well-placed to win, Mónica Bello, Cern’s head of arts tells Eleni Courea.
Mònica’s top tips
- Show passion and enthusiasm and put across a clear idea of what you want to do in residence at Cern.
- Remember that reviewers like to feel a synergy between the artist and their proposal.
- Don’t try to use technical scientific terms you don’t understand in your bid: explain things in your own language.
- Artists with some experience, especially when they have worked on science before, are at an advantage.
- Think and talk about how your residency might lead to the production of an innovative artwork.
Winners of the Collide International Award (the scheme’s formal title) receive a grant of 15,000 Swiss francs (£11,300) to carry out their proposal, a monthly stipend of 2,000 Swiss francs and their travel costs and accommodation are covered.
