As a previous Wellcome Trust resources grant winner, archivist Philippa Smith knew that, even with a unique project idea, a firm grip on detail was needed for her latest bid to win. Sophie Inge reports.
In 2016, Philippa Smith, who is head of collections at London Metropolitan Archives, secured an £88,416 Wellcome Trust Research Resources Grant to catalogue and make accessible the archive of the Tavistock and Portman clinics, which have been at the forefront of mental health treatment since the first world war.
Wellcome’s Research Resources Grants aim to improve access to health-related library and archive collections by supporting cataloguing, conservation and digitisation projects. All libraries and archives across the UK can apply for up to £150,000 for projects lasting up to three years. The scheme opens once a year and the next deadline is 12 April.
