Opportunity profile: Takeoff for musculoskeletal research

Research into musculoskeletal conditions is set for a £12.5-million boost as the Nuffield Foundation relaunches its Oliver Bird Fund. Ashleigh Furlong talks to Joshua Robinson, the fund’s programme head, ahead of the first call.

The Nuffield Foundation relaunched its Oliver Bird Fund—first set up in 1948—on 14 December 2018. In its first call, the foundation will award research grants across three programmes.

  • Research involving secondary analysis of national data on the biological, social and economic determinants and outcomes of musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Research focusing on local data sources through local data integration pilot sites.
  • Responsive, interdisciplinary research into musculoskeletal conditions that will generate new knowledge on health and social wellbeing for people living with the conditions.

There is no upper limit on the funding amount that can be applied for, but the Nuffield Foundation’s call guidance says that research, development and analysis grants normally range from £10,000 to £500,000, with most falling between £50,000 and £300,000.
