My winning proposal: Big funding for ambitious postdocs

Branco Weiss Fellowships give postdocs in any field the chance to lead well-funded five-year research projects. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that requires a suitably ambitious idea, 2018 fellow Anna-Sophia Wahl tells Sophie Inge.

Anna-Sophia’s top tips

  • Propose the research project you want to do rather than the one you feel you should do.
  • The fellowship encourages original projects but this is not blue-sky research; all projects should aim for impact.
  • Present your project and its importance in a way that anyone with a science background could understand.
  • If you make it through to the interview, prepare for a grilling from the panel.

The Branco Weiss Fellowship from the Society in Science is named after the academic, entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded the organisation. It is run by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich).
