Tom’s top tips:
- Don’t be afraid to start at the beginning in a field you know little about; buy a primer, read it and go from there.
- Lean on those with the expertise you need for your bid to succeed.
- In applications don’t pretend to understand fields you are not knowledgeable about and maybe even mention that you hope to boost your understanding of the topic.
- At the same time be bold about what your experience allows you to bring in to the field.
