The Institute of Historical Research's fellowships encourage early career historians to present their ideas

Top tips

  • Read the guidelines carefully and make sure you are responding to the individual scope of the fellowship in question
  • The institute likes to engage in a mutually beneficial relationship with its grantees, so take time to get to know it and consider how you could contribute
  • Novelty and originality are highly valued; be sure to show why your project should be funded
  • Be ready to express yourself to non-specialists at interview

The Institute of Historical Research offers a number of fellowships to PhD and postdoctoral students which, in addition to enabling research projects, include career support and training. These include its past and present fellowships for postdoctoral historical researchers whose work engages processes of social, economic, political and cultural change within their field of study. The fellowships are worth approximately £70,000 over two years, with the next deadline for applications expected in January 2021.
