The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s Standard Research Grants are a vital source of funding for hundreds of biologists in the UK. Bids to the scheme are assessed twice a year, and the next deadline for applications is on 29 September.

With many excellent applications submitted in every round, good grantsmanship is crucial, as neuroscientist Robert Hindges explains. In this interview, first published in May 2018, Hindges relates the process that won him a sequential pair of grants in 2014 and 2018, and moved his research closer to clinical impact as a result.
