My winning proposal: Overseeing a big decarbonisation bid

Pulling an interdisciplinary team together can be less daunting than you imagine

The climate and ecological crises have risen rapidly up institutional funders’ agendas over the past couple of years. For UK Research and Innovation, this has meant more targeted calls from individual research councils—the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s Adventurous Energy Research for a Sustainable Net Zero competition, profiled recently in Funding Insight, is a good example—and also bigger interdisciplinary calls drawing on the expertise of two or more councils.

Launched in July last year, the Decarbonising Heating and Cooling 2 call was one such scheme. Up to £1.5 million was available to projects with at least half of their focus within the EPSRC’s remit or half within the Natural Environment Research Council’s. Projects had to contain an economic and/or social science angle too.
