In June, the African Academy of Sciences launched a major funding programme for early career researchers. Worth a total of €25 million (US$30m), the AAS’s African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence pilot programme, known as Arise, aims to fund 40 emerging research leaders across the continent, in as many African countries as possible.
