Despite EU funder being open to all, Africans only win a fraction of its grants

Winning a European Research Council grant can be a career-defining moment for any researcher.

The EU’s flagship research funding agency has a budget of €16 billion for 2021-27 under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. Competition for grants is intense, and the ERC’s funding schemes are open to all nationalities, as long as winners take up their grant at an institution within the EU or a country associated to Horizon Europe.
