An ESRC scheme aims to unlock previously unavailable data sets and free up specialised careers

Top tips

  • Use the breadth of data sets available rather than focusing on a single data set.
  • Less experienced applicants should include costings for research support, additional expertise and mentorship.
  • Get to know the data as much as you can, using the published metadata and user guides.
  • Synthetic data sets are available on request to help you formulate your ideas.
  • Think about how you can draw out the unique value of the data and tie them back to policy relevance.

The Economic and Social Research Council is working once again with the Administrative Data Research UK partnership on a scheme for projects involving national administrative data sets recently made available to researchers.
