The National Science Foundation is a US megafunder behind a cavalcade of grants
The National Science Foundation is central to the scientific endeavour in the US.
Founded in 1950 with the ambitious mission to “promote the progress of science, to advance the national health, prosperity and welfare and to secure the national defence”, the NSF has become one of the largest federal government funding agencies in the US and now accounts for around 25 per cent of national government support for basic research.
