Fostering genuine R&D in the arts

The Digital R&D Fund for the Arts can help to maximise the cultural benefits of research by funding active partnerships between academics and creative enterprises, says Nesta's Tandi Williams.

The UK has a world-leading research base and internationally recognised arts and cultural organisations. But how well are the various components connected, and are we making the most of the opportunities to obtain and use knowledge in the arts? At the UK innovation charity Nesta, we’ve been exploring the potential for R&D with digital technology in the arts. We’ve done this through our work with National Theatre Live and more recently through the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts, with our partners the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Arts Council England.
