My year working with China’s mobile giant Huawei

Filippo Fazi is the principal investigator in a three-year audio project carried out by the University of Southampton in collaboration with Huawei. Here he shares his experiences of his first year of working with the Chinese technology giant.

Top tips

  • Reputation is important: make sure your organisation is perceived as a centre of excellence internationally.
  • Persevere during the application process: if your idea is good, Huawei will work with you.
  • Personal contact is important.
  • Working with companies means striking a balance between theory and practical activity. Being able to show companies a demonstration of the impact and industrial applicability of what you do is very persuasive.

The project, carried out at Southampton’s Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, is led by Philip Nelson, professor of acoustics and pro vice-chancellor for research and enterprise, and me. We have been active in three-dimensional audio and audio technology for many years.
