Organising conferences, special sessions or mini-symposia is an essential way for early-career researchers to gain skills and contacts. Alexander Casson, junior research fellow at Imperial College London, shares his experience.
The importance of scientific conferences to early-career researchers is well known: for promoting new research, for hearing about new developments and for carrying out essential networking. A good conference is about much more than presenting a paper.
Many larger conferences also incorporate organised special sessions and symposia that allow invited speakers to discuss specific research ideas and to give an overview of the state of the art in one high-profile session. Organising such sessions can be a great opportunity for networking and to start becoming a more prominent figure at the conference.
