Horizon 2020 essentials: What universities should know

Horizon 2020 has launched, bringing plentiful funding and potential challenges to researchers and research services. Gill Wells, head of the University of Oxford’s Europe funding team, tells us what to expect.

Horizon 2020 is a single programme that brings together three European Commission ideas: the Framework programme, the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.

Three core areas, known as pillars, underpin Horizon 2020: Excellent Science, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges. These replace the four pillars of the previous Framework programme, Framework 7: Cooperation, Ideas, People and Capacities.
