The world of public research funding in the UK is a crowded place, with seven research councils and the Technology Strategy Board all sitting side by side. Here Brian Owens gives you a quick guide to each of the funding bodies, with some basic facts and figures and notes on their strategic priorities.
Research Councils UK
Research Councils UK is the umbrella group that brings together the UK’s seven research councils. It does not directly fund research itself, but works to coordinate the activities of the other councils in areas such as demonstrating economic and social impact to government. RCUK also looks after many of the councils’ back-office functions through the Shared Services Centre—a separate limited company owned by the research councils.
