Phil Ward takes stock of the ESRC’s Big Data Network initiative and asks Kirsty Grainger, the council’s senior policy manager for data and resources, what made the network’s most recent slate of grant-winners stand out.

The Economic and Social Research Council has so far invested £64 million in its Big Data Network—a variety of initiatives that aim to help harness the explosion of data triggered by the digital age and in particular use them to better inform policy.

The network has been implemented in three phases since its inception in 2013. First, an Administrative Data Research Network was established to facilitate access to data that is routinely collected by government organisations. Accredited researchers were able to carry out research within the ESRC’s remit using linked, anonymised administrative data. This was then extended in the second phase towards the commercial and voluntary sectors.
