Research ethics: First, do no harm…and then?

Researchers must go beyond ensuring their participants are not harmed, says Helen Kara

When it comes to data collection and ethics, most researchers recognise that they must ensure their participants are not harmed. This is true and important but it is by no means the whole story.

“First, do no harm” is part of the Hippocratic oath that used to be taken upon qualification by medical doctors.
