Changes in the powerhouse biomedical charity’s strategy are set to shake up funding patterns
Founded in 1936 by pharmaceutical entrepreneur Henry Wellcome, the charity that still carries his name has grown into one of the most important research funders in the UK, and globally.
The Wellcome Trust is now a powerhouse international foundation. In 2022, the trust revealed that its investment portfolio grew from £29 billion ($38bn) in 2020 to £38.2bn ($50bn). This, the year after it enjoyed the most significant returns on its investments for 25 years. It supports scientific research into health and wellbeing spanning some of the poorest regions of the world and some of the richest institutions.
