Wellcome plans changes to Pathfinder awards

The Wellcome Trust is considering changing its Pathfinder awards scheme, which funds collaborations between academics and industry to create products or processes in neglected diseases, following concerns raised after the funding scheme’s first round of awards.

The scheme awards grants of £100,000, lasting 18 months. Industry partners need to match the trust’s funding and show that they have experience of bringing products to market. 

Under existing rules, all the funds are awarded to the industry partner, who also keeps hold of intellectual property rights. The company is then required to pay out to the academic partner.
