Moody’s warning over credit risks linked to rise in pension bills and Covid-19

Credit ratings agency Moody’s has warned that pressure on university budgets due to the Covid-19 pandemic will make it harder to fund a rise in their pension costs.

In an analysis published 3 December, the agency said the financial pressures associated with pension costs and the pandemic would “limit universities” capacity to accommodate an increase in pension costs”, and it suggested that measures including government intervention would be “key to containing the associated credit challenges”.
