A record proportion of 18 year olds in the UK have accepted a place at university this year, according to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service.

According to UCAS figures published on 19 September, 33.8 per cent of all UK 18 year olds have been placed in higher education institutions, a new high for this point in the admissions cycle.

The figures, which analyse acceptance numbers as of 28 days after A level results day, also show that more than a fifth (20.4 per cent) of young people from the UK’s most disadvantaged backgrounds—as measured by POLAR quintile—have a confirmed place at university or college.
