Four VCs talk Brexit

Anna McKie speaks with four vice-chancellors of UK universities to get a snapshot of how Brexit is affecting institutions and what they should do next.

Adam Tickell, University of Sussex

Sussex has only very recently started to feel the effects of Brexit. In 2016 the number of applications from European Union students went up, but they have fallen a bit this year. Also, staff are beginning to wobble. About 25 per cent of our academic staff are European and I am trying to convince them that they should feel secure here, but they feel quite disconnected because of Brexit. I know some are being approached quite aggressively by European universities who say (a) you are not welcome in the UK and (b) you may not get access to European funding in the UK.
