Response and responsibility

The referendum result cast doubt on the values and principles held dear in higher education. The fightback by universities is just getting started.

Anyone who meets me for more than five minutes soon realises how far I am from making my peace with Brexit. The referendum result shook me to my very core, which is hardly surprising given that it felt like an attack on my identity across multiple planes.

As an immigrant, I no longer feel welcome here. My husband’s family are Irish, living close to the border with Northern Ireland. Many of my friends are European Union citizens, and in my professional life I support one of the areas most affected by the decision: higher education. I have found myself regularly contemplating who I am, what I stand for and what my role will be in post-Brexit Britain.
