Robbins rebooted

In a speech due to be delivered today, Liam Byrne is expected to call for an alternative approach to university funding.

The last weekend saw much speculation on Labour’s position towards the financing of higher education. The Labour Party will set out its plans in due course but its leader Ed Miliband has articulated a clear direction of travel on this. A core goal must be to bring down the levels of debt cancellation that are making the current system unsustainable.

That is what we have taken from the revelations of the past two weeks; revelations which have driven a coach and horses through the government’s higher education policies, raising concern for students, taxpayers and vice chancellors alike, comprehensively changing the terms of the debate.
