The government should focus on reintroducing maintenance grants, the Conservative party conference has heard.
Speaking at a fringe event on 2 October, former Conservative universities and science minister David Willetts said that when it comes to student finance the priority should be helping students, particularly poorer students, while at university.
Willetts defended the continuously under-fire tuition fee system. He said that the introduction of fees had lifted the cap on student numbers, therefore increasing the number of disadvantaged students attending university.
