Philip Augar’s review into post-18 education has been met with mixed reviews by higher education leaders.

When the review was published on 30 May, much of the initial reaction centred around the eye-catching proposal to cut tuition fees from £9,250 to £7,500 per year.

In the review, Augar’s panel recommended that fees should be reduced and universities topped up with a government-funded teaching grant directed towards high-cost, high-value subjects and disadvantaged students. Prime minister Theresa May, who commissioned the review in February 2018, backed the proposal.
