Growth in higher apprenticeships has ‘long-term consequences’

A major business group has warned that growth in higher-level apprenticeships combined with a fall in lower-level apprenticeship starts could have “stark” consequences for social mobility.

In a report published on 17 September, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said a trend towards growth in apprenticeships starts for high-cost, higher-level apprenticeships—equivalent to a degree—and a drop in lower-level apprenticeship starts could have “long-term consequences for what an ‘apprenticeship’ is”.

The group stressed that it could result in “stark” consequences for social mobility among the 50 per cent of people who do not study for a degree.
