Former universities minister pitches plan for universities to help boost regional skills

Conservative MP Chris Skidmore, a former universities and science minister, has called for a “red wall university movement” to rival the red brick universities of the 19th century.

Speaking at a webinar hosted by the think tank ResPublica on 17 November, Skidmore—who was minister from December 2018 to July 2019 and again from September 2019 to February 2020—said the government “has got to be able to deliver in these red wall seats that they won [in the last election], otherwise they will lose them”.
