Fair A-level results ‘impossible’, says Social Mobility Commission

Commissioner calls for free catch-up for students

A member of the Social Mobility Commission has argued that some school leavers should be offered a fully funded foundation year at university to avoid “catastrophic unfairness” among this year’s cohort.

In a blogpost published on 19 January, Sammy Wright, commissioner for schools and higher education at the SMC, said that students who received their A-level results this summer were “at risk of catastrophic unfairness” because the impact of the pandemic made it “impossible for [grades] to be fair”.
