New legislation will extend duties on academic freedom and free speech on campuses

A widely trailed bill designed to combat the “chilling effect of censorship” on university campuses will be introduced in parliament today, putting universities at risk of being fined for breaching the new rules.

The higher education (freedom of speech) bill, announced in the Queen’s speech yesterday, will introduce more rules around how universities protect and promote academic freedom and free speech. If universities, student unions or colleges breach their duties under the planned bill, they “may face sanctions, including fines”.
