Tories propose tighter student visa controls

Manifesto illuminates the party’s thinking on migration.

The visa system for students would be overhauled under any future Conservative government, according to the party’s manifesto published today.

New measures would be introduced to “tackle abuse and reduce the numbers of students overstaying once their visa expire”, it states. The party would continue to crack down on bogus colleges that allow foreign students to work rather than study, including by monitoring the campuses opened in London by universities located elsewhere in the UK, it states. It says the party would review the highly trusted sponsor system for student visas and introduce targeted sanctions for colleges or businesses that fail to ensure that migrants comply with the terms of their visa.
