Government should keep a single agency to supervise every institution, say conference speakers.

The new higher education regulatory system must take a “holistic view” both of institutions as well as the higher education system as a whole, according to panellists speaking at a conference on the green paper held on 26 January.

Madeleine Atkins, chief executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, said that whatever happens to her organisation, there must remain a “single regulatory system” overseeing all the UK nations and all types of provider. Such a system is necessary to scrutinise the financial health of institutions and protect the student interest, she said.
