Legal action over admissions transparency

Obligation to disclose widening participation data announced.

Universities must publish admissions and retention data by gender, ethnic background and socio-economic class, David Cameron has said. A meeting is being held in Downing Street today, 1 February, to discuss the plan. Sajid Javid, the business secretary, and Jo Johnson, the universities minister, are due to meet vice-chancellors and head teachers.

The prime minister promised legal action in an article published in The Sunday Times on 31 January. Cameron said he wanted to highlight institutions that enrol relatively few people from disadvantaged groups, including black students and white working-class boys, and to enable schools and universities to identify where best to focus their efforts.
