Home Office memo leaked

The government has considered restricting immigration from the European Union, writes Alison Goddard.

The home secretary, Theresa May, has taken advice on cutting net annual migration from the European Union to 75,000 people, down from 106,000 at present, according to a report in yesterday’s Sunday Telegraph. If enacted, the move would hit both student and staff recruitment at British universities. At 2:30 this afternoon Ms May is due to give evidence to the Home Affairs select committee inquiry into the work of the home secretary.

The row about seating men and women separately on university campuses has subsided somewhat. Prime minister David Cameron said he was against allowing such practices, according to the BBC. The Observer yesterday ran a comment piece, as did The Sunday Telegraph.
