Queen’s speech but no higher education bill

Today the Queen is due to deliver her annual speech to Parliament; and 65 British universities appear on QS's lists of the top 50 universities in the world in 30 different subjects

The Queen is due to deliver her speech to Parliament this afternoon, which will outline the coalition government’s legislative plans for the coming year. There will be no higher education bill, instead government agencies will try to manage university finances and student numbers using existing laws. But do expect to hear legislative plans for the reform of immigration, freedom of information and data protection, and health and social care, according to the BBC.

Some 65 British universities appear on the lists of top 50 institutions worldwide in 30 different subjects published by QS today. Internationally Harvard topped the most lists (ten) followed by MIT (seven). UC Berkeley (four) tied with Oxford (four) in third place, followed by Cambridge (three). Seventeen British universities appear in the top 20 in at least one subject, far more than any country outside America.
