The nation cuts university funding and invests instead in science, writes Alison Goddard.
Today the Welsh Assembly will announce that it is investing £21 million in creating three networks intended to boost world-class scientific research. The three hubs will concentrate on discovering new medicines, innovative engineering and tackling the challenges of green energy. At 11am Edwina Hart, the science minister, and Julie Williams, the chief scientific adviser for Wales, will officially launch the scheme at Bangor University.
Yesterday the Welsh version of the annual grant letter arrived. It detailed funding cuts of 5 per cent or £18 million. Huw Lewis, the education minister in the Welsh Assembly, plans to introduce greater scrutiny of Welsh universities and their record at getting people from poor households into university.
