Salmond as kingmaker

Scottish National Party leader reckons it could hold the balance of power following the election, writes Alison Goddard.

Alex Salmond of the SNP has said that a Labour minority government would have to make concessions to Scotland for his party to support the government. Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, has ruled out any formal coalition with the SNP but would nevertheless rely on the SNP to vote with Labour to get budgets and legislation through Parliament. The story features prominently in many of today’s newspapers. The BBC has a round-up of the front pages. Any such partnership would almost certainly lead to tuition fees in England falling to £6,000.

Meanwhile the Scotsman reports that the SNP-appointed post-study work group has recommended the reintroduction of the visa. Indeed the only voice not to want students to be removed from net migration targets and the reintroduction of post-study work visas appears to be that of Theresa May. Unfortunately she is the home secretary.
