MPs will be asked to amend draft university legislation

The higher education and research bill is due to be scrutinised tomorrow.

The draft legislation before Parliament is a "disaster" that "has to be stopped", Martin Wolf has written for the Financial Times. He says that the government proposes to "abolish university independence by administrative fiat" and states that "granting a government-controlled body the power to revoke a royal charter is worse than a crime", in a piece that was published on 2 September. The committee of MPs that is scrutinising the higher education and research bill will meet for the first time this week.
